Schaefer created her Moses basket while she was pregnant with her first child.

As a mother and product designer, she wanted Nesta’s Nest to be handcrafted from natural materials—wool felt and light beech wood— and with environmental integrity. With her baby in mind, she wanted this essential object to nurture and protect as well as to serve both the needs of portability and aesthetic satisfaction. In light of her environmental concerns, she created Nesta’s Nest as a durable and beautiful object so that it would last in the family beyond its utility as a bassinet and function as a fabled container for toys and games. She lives and works with her son in Brooklyn, New York.
